definatly a cavatiation/windage problem........ive seen this before on engine dynos.....its not the oil comming up the back of the pan cause the pressure goes away then comes back.....a windage tray will probably solve it as well as possibly a higher volume pan.

FTR I have the stock windage tray.

Speed Demon,
Whats the p/n for the Moroso windage tray you have?
Sorry I forgot about this thread. Pretty sure I'm running this tray.

I'm running the melling select 10554 too so it's not a pump issue.

Are you running the GM white spring with that pump? It doesn't look like you were having the same issue as me and wrd1972, but I think I may try that Moroso tray.

FWIW, the Melling pink spring is identical to the GM white spring. The pink spring comes with the 10554.

The white spring was stronger from the test I conducted, but it wasn't very scientific. I put both on a screwdriver and pushed them together. The pink spring compressed more so logic would say it isn't as stiff. Then again it was a very crude test.

Both springs are rated at 70# each, so who knows.

If the pickup tube hasn't fallen off, and if you're not cavitating, my only other thought would be a problem with the oil pump drive mechanism at the rear of the lifter valley (ie, the dummy distributor shaft).

The dummy distributor shafts are made of plastic, and have been known to break and/or bend -- thus the gear of the dummy distributor shaft (turning the oil pump) loses contact with the cam gear driving it. For this reason, I made a metal retainer plate to hold it in place. Again, just a thought -- might not be the problem here.

Might also consider hooking up a mechanical gauge and make sure it isn't just a buggy oil pressure sending unit/gauge. If it *always* happens with high RPM regardless of load, you could just rev the engine in neutral and watch the mechanical gauge. IIRC there should be at least one extra port on the driver's side of the engine block to tap into.
Mine did the same thing. When I took it apart this is what was wrong. The oil pump drive gear had stripped from walking away from the cam. It was badly worn on the bottom of the gear.

Alright you guys running the Moroso windage tray -- did you clearance the hole in the tray for the dipstick or did you bend the dipstick tube, so that the dipstick will go through the hole in the windage tray?? Otherwise the dipstick will just hit the top of the tray. I tried bending the tube a bit just enough for it to clear but now cant get through the hole in the block...may try sanding on the tube a bit, just wondering if any of you ran into this issue...

Glad to hear you solved the issue. This is scary as I'm running a canton pan but havent actually got the car on the street yet. At idle or stand still did you noticed anything or only under load? I think I might just order the moroso windage tray just to be safe before I get to drive it under load.

id say its electrical. you could try to get a mechanical oil pressure gause and just try it. my 3rd gen said it was 3psi - 25psi on a new build. i tried a new gauge and it was more like 30psi - 65psi

The Canton pan has a built-in windage tray, so you're good.

Check post #35. The OPs problem was the windage tray, not electrical.

Old post, but regardless even the Canton pan has been known to cause windage issues with the stock crank. The fix is either to take out the Canton windage tray in place of the Moroso or run 5.5 quarts instead of the six the pan allows for.

^Cool thanks I'll keep this in mind when I finally get her out on the road! I did see a couple people saying they had problems even with the Canton pan/windage tray which is what worried me lil but if I do any problems I kept the link for the Moroso...
