Default LT guage cluster questions

Hello everyone. New to the forum here, great sight by the way... I have a question hopefully some one can answer for me. I have recently purchased a 1997 camaro SS with LT1 and T56 setup. all wiring, computer and all that good stuff. I'm putting this in a project car not a 4th gen. I would like to use one of the factory 4th gen guage clusters for it. I have found a Z28 guage cluster for a LS setup from a 2000 camaro. My question is, Will the LS guage clusters work with my LT motor and computer? I really dont want to buy it and have it end up being diffrent and not work for me. Any info would be helpfull.

Thanks,
Randy

Hey Randy, welcome to the site.

Unfortunately, LS1 gauges will not work in LT1 vehicles. The tach won't work right because the LT1 PCM puts out twice as many pulses as a LS1 PCM and the fuel gauge won't work because the the resistance range on the LT1 fuel gauge is 0-90 ohms and it's 70-240 ohms on a LS1 fuel gauge.

since you don't say what car the setup is going into, you can use any 93-97 transam gauge cluster, you can use any 93-97 camaro cluster. any newer stuff the electronics don't work.

There are some minor differences between the years. Not every year will swap in, especially 97s in the Camaro. T/As and Camaros are different too.

Thank you for your repls.

to give more detail.... I'm putting the 1997 SS camaro LT1, T56, harness and computer in my 1991 convertiable Camaro. i'm working on a custom dash for it. I like the 4th gen guage layout and there are some nice inserts i can get for it. so my question now is can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out exactly witch guage cluster i need to mate up to my 97 SS camaro setup? Again, Tahnks for all the replys.

Thanks,
Randy

Let me ask this, does the LS harness going to the guage cluster have teh same connectors as the LT guage cluster? I konw how to fix the puls count for the tac. and I can modify the fuel guage will read correctly from E up to 1/2 a tank at least... as long as my wire harness will plug into it then i can deal with the fuel guage.

Honestly I would look for a 97 cluster to minimize the complication. I am not sure if the harnesses are plug and play. I do know that if they aren't and you are handy with wiring then you can adjust some of the pinouts.

the connector is exactly the same for the 97 as for 98-02s as far as the camaro goes. the ta connector is also the same for all years. the 97 cluster looks exactly like the 98-02, why don't you use the one you have?

I dont have any guage cluster at the moment. I am looking to purchase one. I have my 1991 camaro and I purchased a 1997 SS camaro LT1 and T56 trans along with the engine bay, dash and cabin harnesses as well as the computer. but no gauge cluster was in the car by the time I purchased everything.

Thanks for all of the info. its a big help.

lkqonline you can check for a 97 cluster. that's how I got mine, you'll pay anywhere from 30-200, so be patient and start looking. mine was 50ish from lkq. Sometime you find on on ebay too.

here's a link to my lessons learned http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/showthread.php?t=752867

also you'll have to become an expert at depinning connectors. it's really easy once you get the hang of it (don't use a paperclip), take a look at this thread also...
