Unhappy Header Help Please!

Can some one help me before I rage to hard and give up? Im trying to install AS&M headers on my 1994 Camaro. The manifold are off, starters removed, alternators off, and most of the spark plugs are off. We're trying to get the dipstick tube out but its just not coming out. How did you guys get it out? Also i noticed the EGR value connection thats supposed to connect to the headers is off can that tube be reshaped to line up with it? Thanks in advance for help. Its my first big project on this car and its turning out to be way to difficult.

The dipstick is a TIGHT fit your going to have to take the screw out and wiggle it and bent just a LITTLE bit. Thats what i had to do, and it is a tight *** fit back in there too.

yeah there is a 10mm bolt that holds it to the block about half way up. Just wiggle the tube until it starts to move. Before you go to install it again, take some 1,000 grit sand paper and lightly sand the part of the tube that slides in the block. That will help it slide it back in.

(obviously make sure everything is clean before you install it back in)

aaaannd you may need to undo the motor mounts and jack up the motor to aid in the installation of the headers.

Edit: you should be able to bend the EGR tube a bit. Just don't move it too too much. Its stiff, metal and can tear if bent too many times. Like a paper clip.

Ok thats actually pretty cleaver, i'll remember that and get some 1,000 grit. Its just getting the tube actually out is there any way to help get it out? Also how about reconnecting the egr to the passenger header will the hose be able to bend to the new location?

If you're having fun getting it out, wait until you have to put it back in.

Use a looooong screwdriver and put the edge on the lip of the bracket coming from the bottom and tap the end of the screwdriver. It will eventually pop the dipstick loose.

Putting the dipstick back in is easy if you sand it down and lube it up.

Used a long screw driver or pry bar and a hammer from the bottom and popped it out that way aswell. Worked like a charm. As for getting the headers in i highly suggest undo-ing the motor mounts and jacking the motor up to make your like 10x easier. After doing so my long tubes literally slide into place.

Wish I thought of removing the motor mounts and lifting. But if for some crazy reason you don't want to, the way I did it I put the whole car on stands and dropped the driver side from the top and passenger up from the bottom. All in all it's not that bad took maybe an hour to get the header bolts in

If you have to raise the motor to put in mids, you're doing something wrong, . My MACs (similar to the AS&Ms) literally fell into place.

Long tubes are a different story, but even then it's trivial on whether you need to jack the motor or not.

no, i meant 1,000grit. Something real fine just to take the black paint off. It doesnt take much. 100 would be too rough IMO

100 would take the paint right off. No metal unless you wanted to. Even 400 would take a while.

Good luck, things may be a bitch sometimes to do yourself but in the long run you have more of a sense of accomplishment and ownership with the car, not to mention you learn more and save money while doing it.
