Default Steering wheel removal ?

Just checking with you guys to see if there is anything else I need to do for safety when removing the airbag from the steering wheel? I pulled the 15 amp fuse from the panel inside the drivers dash area and removed the NEGATIVE cable on the battery. The car has been sitting like this since midnight yesterday. I assume 12 hours is long enough for any residual energy to be depleted. Can you think of anything else I need to do for the safe removal of the airbag.

I'm headed to autozone in a bit to rent the steering wheel puller so I can put my new wheel on

Check out the 4th paragragh on the first post in the link below. He's got it covered.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...oval-pics.html

"FIRST, disconnect the battery, then disable the SIR (supplemental inflatable restraint) system. To get to its connector you need to remove the panels underneath the steering column. They’re held in place either by bolts (8mm I think) &/or philips head screws. The SIR connector is the yellow 2-way connector under the steering column. Then remove the airbag by undoing the 4 hex screws from behind the steering wheel. Be careful not to drop the airbag, and you might as well be extra safe and place it face up away from anything important."

So actually there is a 3rd step. Remove the connector from under the steering wheel.

1. disconnect NEGATIVE battery cable
2. remove 15 amp airbag fuse
3. remove/dis-connect yellow connector under steering wheel in lower dash

Then proceed to dis-assembly.

This is the only time I have been nervous to do something to my car. I hate the airbag

what wheel are you going with? Are you going to keep your horn? If so, keep us posted on how to retain it. I'm just curious for the future.

Hopefully someone can confirm this is the right clip to dis-engage. It is under the dash to the right of the steering column. I just want to make sure I'm removing the correct yellow clip.

Here is the pic: (car is a 96 WS6 if it makes a difference)

Hopefully somebody can identify this for me quickly

PS:
I just found the information on shoebox's website. I'm going to remove the wheel tonight and hopefully install the new one

That should be the one. Yellow normally indicates airbag connectors.

That's the connector. And you're correct:
1st - negative cable
2nd - airbag fuse
3rd - airbag connector

Also I would wait about 15 mins. before doing any work after you disconnect the battery just to make sure there isn't any residual charge. It's fairly straightforward but it takes a bit of time to actually get the bag off b/c the 4 bolts are in there pretty deep and your torx bit might not reach all the way in.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I unhooked the yellow connector this morning and I will probably pull the wheel later tonight.

Perrco,
Thanks for the heads up on the race wheel, but I'm replacing my factory with a custom wrapped black alacantara, black perforated leather, red alcantara 12:00 position, and a red chain stitch. The wheel has also been converted from charcoal to black. ( I will remember to wear safety glasses )

I8ASaleen,
I'm getting the car ready for that roll race on the Dallas North Tollway I'll be ready for the dig race as well. Just trying to tidy up the line lock & the two step for the slicks. I don't want to get caught slippin'

here are some pics of the wheel in case you guys have not seen the thread in appearance and detailing:

I will still agree with your initial assessment. Our cars will be a hell of a race for pure bolt-on LT1's My car has been running absolutely nasty since I got my MSD DIS4 ignition box hooked up again. The car is just killing the drag radials in first. I actually ran into a black 2006 GT with the 500 body kit (the car looked stunning) on it, (manual, headers, exhaust, CAI, and gears) and I completely broke that thing in half. I know the 05/06's don't really run that well, but it's still fun to get a quick romp with a newer stang.

PS: don't run open headers. The knock retard is ridiculous, just open the cut-out for the extra 10 ponies

I will post pics in the next couple days of the steering wheel install. I just finished and it looks sweet !

Welp I guess it's time to order a y-pipe. Think I'm gonna do a y and a dumped bullet before the axle.

Are you doing true duals or just the single dump? Do you still drive the car on the street? My buddy did it on a LS1 a while back and he said the constant droning of the exhaust was too much over time.
