can i use a 350 block that is not an lt1 block and make it work with an lt1 top end. i know heads will be different cuz the lt1 are revrse cooled. but im not sure about the distributor because the lt1 has it in the front. please give me some info!

 

Nope.

 

It can be done, but it is not worth the effort and expence unless the parts are free.

 

3rd gen guys put lt1 intakes/cams on their tpis.

 

What does that have to do with putting LT1 heads on a SBC?

 

I know it's kinda tricky but a TPI motor is what most people refer to as a "traditional SBC." Couple that with the fact that the op was talking about a "top end" not specifically "heads." HE did, however, specifically mention the heads "being different" already. Clearly, you ASSumed he was talking about heads, and I mentioned a part of the "top end" that WILL WORK.

I suppose it can be done with enough welding and drilling and port matching and who knows what all else. But, man, why would you even want to open that can of worms!?

The machine work costs would be prohibitive, not to mention finding someone competent enough to do it but also willing to tackle the job.

When all is considered I'd say forget it. "Can" it be done and "should" it be done are different, diametrically opposed questions. There are many things we "can" do but "shouldn't".

the reason i ask is because i have a long block that isnt an lt1 ready to go and my lt1 in my z28 blew a head gasket and i was gonna see if i could put that one in place of the lt1 block

 

You probably could more easily than said, since its a long block if you want to go carbed that is. I don't know what that entails tho.

 

you can find lt blocks in almost any junkyard. at least in my area.

 

The work required would outway the benefit.

 

how would you use your accessories? not to mention no place for distributor.

You'd need to use an LT1 specific ( fbody, B body, vette) crank hub and accessories or get real creative. People have modified the LT1 Intake to fit a distributor. Need a drill press and weld in a shim. And cut the cowl.
