Default LT-1 Mods advice please?

NEW "B"

I have a 1995 LT-1 Z28 78,000 w/ 4,000 on new block. OPTI-SPARK again after 4000 miles!! water pump leaked!

So, this is my solution -

New GM perf. Opti-spark
Electric Water Pump
While in there, GM perf. HD timing chain

PLEASE give me some suggestions as to what else I should do while in there. I would like to do a nice cam but don't want to touch the heads and intake (not that advance and rich). What would be a good cam to just slide in with out the added headache?

Thanks

Really shop around for an opti, it's easy to over pay. Check out "thepartsopros" on ebay for some of the best pricing. Also check into Chandler Motorsports opti's. They are cheap (like less than $100, I believe) and I haven't seen anything bad about them yet. Several guys run those on here and I'm sure they'll chime in.

Picking a proper cam takes some knowledge and research, and if you're not up to snuff or experienced, it'd probably be best to talk to a professional. Give Elliot Portworks or Advanced Inductions a call, and they can hook you up with what you need for a good price.

Remember though, when doing a cam you're going to want to freshen up and upgrade some of the head internals/valvetrain, do roller rockers, springs, ect. All stuff a professional could really help you out with.

hope this helps.

Hey Thanks!

I have done some engine stuff but no bottom end. I am going to do the opti, elec. water pump, timing chain and I also was going to send the intake and throttle body for cleaning/polishing. I think I am able to do the cam and springs. Just want to know what the right kit would be if someone has a better suggetion than the LT-4 Hot Cam Kit.

Thanks for the input!!

The LT4 hotcam kit is the only "kit" that comes with everything you need, no questions asked, and provides good gains. On a scale of 1-10 for cam-only stock-headed gains, the hotcam kit is a 4. However, there are some site vendors that can package everything together for you for a good price using FAR superior components - http://www.advancedinduction.com/AiProductsCK.html. With the right cam, this kit is a 9+.

hey not to hi jack but i kinda wanna know more about the lt4 hot cam too. Seems like a lot of people say theres a lot better stuff for the money.

But look at this vid, i guess it says lt4 cam but isnt the lt4 cam worse than the hot cam? Apparently its saying that white LT1 is in the 11s with it?

There are a billion cars running around with the hotcam. A search will yield hotcam overload.

for a stock head motor, but with good springs linke crane 10309, the crane 227 or GM 845 cams work well.

offerings by LE or AI are also VERY good but if the heads are being left alone than a 227 will give you good results, better if having head work done as it would be with any cam.

I agree on the EWP mod but would just use a stock timing chain, especially on a stock or small cam motor. The extreeme duty one is fine but if your existing timing set has only 4k miles on it just reuse it after cam swap

LT4 Hot cam was the thing 12+ years ago when few offerings were available for LT1. They work better with the LT4 valves which are lighter in the LT4 heads. That cam likes to see higher RPMs for max power. The 227 and 845 offer more low end TQ

The car looks great... I def suggest either a LE or CC kit... And I would save my pennies and tear the car apart once and build it.. But, do a ton of research and best of luck man!!

Thanks for all the help guys! I have taken into account all of your input and it looks like the best value for me would be the LT4 hot cam kit. I see that the newer CC ,Crane, GM etc cams would be newer technology and better design but also more money! Like previously mentioned, there are a ton of LT4 hot cammed cars running around with this old technology which says to me reliability! Also it is a little cheaper than the others.

the hotcam is a good cam, it sounds great with exhaust, has no drivability problems and is easy for any mail order tuner to get right

as far as a timing chain, I used a rollermaster from scoggin dickey

Last edited by 1redta; Aug 30, 2010 at 04:35 PM. Reason: timing chain

If you're going to spend money on a cam at all, do it right. Get a good recommendation from AI or LE for a cam and valvetrain setup. If you do something like a hotcam setup, you'll be happy for a little while, but you'll regret it later.
