First figure out whats wrong with the thing. Don't decide till you go from there.

When you say the engine is destroyed, what do you mean? What signs do you see pointing to this? It's hard to say if it's worth rebuilding or replacing if ya don't know whats wrong with it.

Blown head gasket is one thing, a siezed up block is another. Tons of possibilities/scenarios.

i think its good deal
your comparing a motor with 97k to a fresh brand new motor... not a rebuild it is new. I personally think it is worth the extra money to go new.

Dealerships that come into possession of these cars and then sell them often offer a "it'll get you home" 1,000 mile warranty and that's it.

If it's a beautiful car, fix it and enjoy it. That's part of owning these cars. They demand a piece of you one way or another. But then you have a great car- you're not another random a$$hole with an Audi.
well in MA any vehicle that costs over $500 needs to be able to pass the inspection and get a sticker, if its rejected for any reason the seller has to pay for the repairs to be able to make it pass or you can return it and get your money back.

OP if the block is good I would get it rebuilt, then you know everything is BRAND NEW and plus you could make it better, bore it out to a 355ci, bump up the compression and fix the weak link and put in some stronger connecting rod bolts

I dealt with something similar, for the first 1.5 years I owned it, it was drivable for about 6 months. Got it home, the opti went 2 weeks later. Got that fixed, the cat was plugged the next week. Fixed that, and the bottom end started knocking about a month later. I didn't really have anywhere to work on the car, and the place I bought it offered to install a used motor for 2k. I found a shop that put in a rebuilt motor, with a 2 year warranty on it for 3400, out the door and went that route. Got the car back, and drove it for a month before the trans went. It's finally back on the road, but in the two years I've owned it, I've only been able to put 10K miles on it. And that's saying something, because I drive 120 miles a day commuting, and it's my DD now.
