Starting problems
Some backround on the car. I bought the car with a blown motor. PO thought it was a bad opti (it was bad too), but it had a rod knock. I rebuilt the motor to stock specs, with the exception of using some forged pistions. Got the motor back in, went to fire it for the first time and was having some trouble. Turned out to be our fault (coil/icm was unpluged). It would need to crank several times before actually starting. We later found the coolant sensor in the water pump had been broken, replaced that and still the same problem. It seemed like it wasn't getting fuel. Did a presure test, was bleeding off real fast. Put a new pump (old one had hole in the plastic line inside the tank), filter, and regulator. Still same problem.
Scaning it gave the code for mass air flow failure. Bought a used one off a member on here and still have the same problem. If I start it and pull the maf out of the air stream the car will die (does this with either one). I haven't tried starting it with it unpluged though. The other codes were for the coolant sensor and the egr not being hooked up.
Car is basicly stock. It has a K&N cai, the air and egr deleted (not tuned for it though). It runs good when it is running. I think it seems to run better when the motor is cold though. It runs in open loop all the time (fans constantly run).
Anyone have any ideas where to go with this? I think I rember reading of someone else having the same problem...but it's been awhile and I haven't been able to find the post in my searching.
