A4 won't shift into 3rd at WOT. Computer or Mechanical?

OK, I've got everything in Tunercat set to low speeds and rpms and I can't get this car to shift into 3rd gear at WOT. 1st to 2nd is fine, but 2nd to 3rd just hits the rev limiter and wont shift unless you back off the throttle. I've got kickdown shift mode set at 62 mph and RPM at 5200 (lowered to get it to shift), rev limiter set to 6000, yet it still goes 85 mph and 6000 RPM.

Am I missing a table in TunerCats that is keeping it from shifting?

What other variables or sensors play a role in shifting at WOT?

I believe this is a mechanical problem, but it shifts fine everywhere except WOT, so I'm lost...

Most likely cause is a worn 3-4 clutchpack and resulting clearance.

Mileage on tranny? Type of rebuild? Who did it?

mguidry629 Sep 17, 2010 09:03 AM

The tranny is all stock and has about 135k miles on it.

bowtienut Sep 17, 2010 09:10 AM

I think you've found the culprit then.
For a car driven hard, that mileage on a stock tranny, especially without a Transgo kit or similar modification, is pretty good.
Higher rpm shifts will always expose that particular issue (3-4 clutches).

That's what my trans did right before it died 3and4 gears went out

Yep.. same thing for mine, 3-4 clutches.

quik95lt1 Sep 17, 2010 09:38 AM

Yep agreed......same thin happened to me wit my old 355 eventually ur gonna get that 100 mph timeslip while ur revving 7100 in third lol

Well I knew it wouldn't last forever, but I was hoping for more than a few weeks. I'll just admit now that I'm a dummy when it comes to transmissions, especially internal parts. Is there anything I can do to prolong it's life? What is a transgo kit and what does it do? I've also heard of corvette servos, what is that and what does it do?

Any advice from here is appreciated.

First thing, where are you located? You need to be VERY picky about whom you let rebuild a 4L60E. 95% of the shops have no clue how to make them last. Depending on your location, hopefully somebody on here can point you to a proven builder.
It's too late to crutch it with the items you mentioned; however, they should be used in the rebuild for better service from here on.
In a nutshell, the Transgo and servo will improve shift timing and increase pressure, where appropriate, to the clutches/band to firm up the shifts, reduce clutch slippage, and prolong the life of the trans.
I don't know if it applies to F-bodies, but I also run a deep pan & filter from a C/K series truck to keep the pump pickup covered during high g's.

The trans go kit,is a shift kit,and the corvette servo is on the passenger side of the trans, its the round thing,it holds more fluid for more holding force, please correct me if I am wrong...If and when you have it rebuilt,go with the BEAST sunshell,9 pack clutches, and a trans cooler, and what ever else the builder says..

My95Z Sep 17, 2010 10:13 AM

I would try setting the trans tables back to stock and see if it goes away before you tear the trans out. If it only started having shifting issues when you did your shift point adjustments that could be the issue.

If it just started not going in 3rd on its own and you didn't adjust the shift points its probably just 3/4 failure like mentioned above, which is very common.

bowtienut Sep 17, 2010 10:24 AM

Yep, that's good advice if he wants to baby it and get by without a rebuild temporarily.
But to utilize that cam, he'll want to shift well above 6000.

hey like they said above before you jump into yankin the trans why dont you take a couple of pics of the tables you changed in the program for the trans and post em up an let me have a looksee at them........just make sure you didn't make an oops somewhere lol....

RamAir95TA Sep 17, 2010 11:54 AM

What throttle body are you using, and what are your TPS readings?

mguidry629 Sep 17, 2010 12:00 PM

Don't worry...I won't be yankin the trans until it craps out completely. I'm in no hurry to run it at the track and I don't mind babying it back and forth to work. It shifts and feels great in normal driving conditions. The only reason I was at WOT was to tune the shift points. This trans is actually from a parts car that I did drive and was running good, but I didn't drive it much before I pulled the motor and trans out, so i can't say if it did this before or not. I can tell you that it WAS doing this before I set the shift tables. One of the first things I did with tuning was increase the rev limiter, top speed, error codes, etc, but that's it. Then I started with timing tables, and other stuff related to idle and cruising. Didn't touch the shift tables until it looked like everything else was straight.

Quik95lt1, I will have to wait until after work to post pictures of my tables. Hell, I can send you my .bin file for the whole damn thing, but I don't think I can post it on here....maybe in a zip file. Either way, I'll try to get it on here this afternoon or tonight.

Just to confirm though: the only variables the computer uses to shift the trans is the mph and rpm, and TPS position of course? It doesn't rely on MAP or anything else to shift?

BTW, I'm located outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My uncle has a machine shop and has been building race motors for 30+ years, so he has plenty of connections and should know who to contact if I decide to rebuild this 4L60E.

If you choose to rebuild it, I HIGHLY recommend Performabuilt. They make some badass 4L60Es for a great price. They are also a site sponsor.

yep absolutly.......pro built auto's out of CA does a good job too....i bough a kit from him and assembled it myself......(worked on the second try lol)

dlk1950 Sep 17, 2010 12:50 PM

When my tranny expired in April ,we ended up getting all the parts for a upgraded build from PATC which is down the road from you. I know their not a sponser, but I have a friend who is a excellent builder and thats who he uses. Almost 100 passes on it now and still working great. 406rwhp/442 rwtq 1.67 60s & I have been racing it every other week

Here's my shift tables. Let me know if there's another table you need to look at. Anyone see anything unusual with my tables?

Also, everyone's mentioning 3/4, but my problem is occuring at the 2/3 shift.

What rear gear ratio?
