Default Keyed Crank.??

Quick question to you LT1 experts...
I replaced all the gaskets on my brothers LT1 and on the crank there is a key cutout on it. Is that my TDC position? oh one more - when I put the Hub back on do I RTV it? (they cut on the hub)
Thanks in advance.

I know for sure on a 95 LT1 Vette motor there is a keyway on the crank, however the hub for the harmonic balancer is a press fit with crank snout bolt holding it on as well. If you think about it, on a stock engine it doesn't matter how the harmonic balancer goes on because the timing is already located by the dowel pin located on the end of the camshaft for the optispark. Now if you had converted to a carbuerated engine then yes, the keyway would be important. Also aftermarket harmonic balancers and crankshafts have keyway provisions so I end up using them because I am used to keyed crankshafts.
