Default 383 or ls2?

im looking for a new engine for my 95 z28? iv been lookin at 383 forged lt1 long blocks and found the price to be around $5,600. i also got a buddy that has an ls2 iron block with the vette heads and intake and think i can get it around a $1,000 or less. so just wondering which one would be a better investment and be cheaper in the long run?

Hey:

If your willing to make all the changes then to me its a no brainer, LSX all the way.

The biggest thing not to go with a LSX, is the change over cost, but looks like the deal you have here, if all is good with everything, changes that equation, and gives you a few more current upgrade options, with bang for the buck for you.

There is no answer to that question. If you figure it all out it takes very similar dollars per hp for old school small blocks (LT included) and gen 3/4 stuff...

This has been beat TO DEATH and there just is no clear answer. The LS stuff does impressive stuff, but I believe thats due to the part availability. Theres just hundreds of combos that anyone can slap together and make big numbers with LS. LT is a little bit tougher because there is so much **** on the market, and so many people who half *** it and get mediocre results.

Simply put: a well thought out and funded combo on either will produce pleasing results.

The cost of changing over to the LS platform will set you further back on your budget for the build, and probably ultimately end up making less power than you could if you simply spent that time, energy, and money working with what you already have...
