Default Break light came on

So I was driving earlier and had to slam on my breaks when I did my break light came on. I had noticed that it was taking me pushing the pedal alot further down than normal before this happened. Can anyone shed a little light on this for me please.

isnt it sad the light he is talking about has the word "brake" spelled correctly on it?
