Default Crank what should he do

my buddy blew up his motor, crank has a lil roughness to it on the number 8 needs to be turned. He doesn't like the idea its 130 to have it turned when for a lil more money he could have a new aftermarket cast crank. This thread is posted somewhere else but it will get more opinions here so here it goes...

what would you rather do if the prices were about the same. new scat cast crank kit with bearings matched PRE balanced from scat. or stock gm crank with 124k miles which will need turned and undersize bearings??? what would you all do?

I've heard nothing but bad things about aftermarket cast cranks. I'd get the stock crank turned and be done with it.

yeah im trying to locate him a good stock one that don't need machine work now. Trying to get him away from this aftermarket cast **** idea so his motor doesn't have to get ripped out again. If i could afford it id rip my motor out an give it to him an put bearings in my 383 an put it in my car but i cant afford it right now

Well you have to understand that eveerything has a "fatigue" cycle or life and I'm not convinced that a 1xx,xxx mile factory crank will be any stronger than a new Scat 9000 cast steel crank. I have never heard of anyone having problems with the Scat cranks, it's always been the Eagle cranks both cast and forged that had problems. The cast ones breaking and the forged requiring the journals to be turned to get them round even on new cranks. Scat's have better machining from what I've seen and been told by my machinist/engine builder. I would get the Scat crank for a few dollars more than rebuilding the 124k factory crank.

fek77k on here has a 95 LT1 Corvette crank. It was mine but I gave it to him, I know he is looking to sell it for cheap. I gave the pistons and rods away as well, I kept the block because it was a 4-bolt main.

What are you basing this comment on??

Can you provide a single example of anyone overpowering a stock crank?

You are a little closer to the truth than the guys who BLINDLY want "anything but stock" but you are still not giving the stock crank credit.

I don't think anyone has a real solid handle on what the HP number the stock crank will handle BUT that said the number is solidly over 500hp, cam and a 150shot is solidly over that number and a LOT of guys have done that and more. If they get greedy they take out stock pistons long before hurting the crank.

When you buy a cheap chinese crank cast or forged you have to leave some room in the budget for corrective machining. You can put $130 in a stock crank and be good or you can gamble $200 on a chinese one than then still maybe have to do some machining to make it right.

I will give you that Scat is better than Eagle but either way I would stay with a stocker.

if your referring to the comment about cast cranks. the proof is with everyone thats ever run one, thinking the stock crank isnt good.

and id rather underrate something then say it can handle a 1000hp and have someone grenade an engine.

Eagle cast cranks are junk and I would never use one but a nicely balanced Eagle Forged crank is a solid pc. Thousands run them without issue in 1000+hp motors

As far as stock cranks go I agree with 96Caprice. They are very stout cranks and will handle almost anything you throw at it.

I have never seen a broke stock crank....

However, with that being said I have seen an Eagle Cast crank handle a 350shot out the hole and never miss a beat....this was a couple years ago and the motor is still living and they sprayed it all the time....
