I can tell you the ones on my 95z were TTY, How could I tell? well as I did the tightening sequence like 40-60-80, at the final torque I noticed that the bolt actually sprung back and every time I reached my desired torque. I could go back to do a final check and the bolts would turn another 1/4 in then they snapped off, I replaced the broken ones with new GM and the same thing. I went to ARP and never had a problem since, they torqued down solid. So who knows?

OK I think regardless of whether they did go to TTY I think many of us did see a change happen over the years and the later ones do seem to have a troubling track record far as reuse.

Seems like a definitive don't reuse the ones GIZMO pictured. Sounds like the change was sometime in 95.

Sounds like I need to add money for 2 sets of head bolts since my 2 Lt1's are 95 & 97. It keeps adding up. LOL

I still didn't get an answer to my question about interchangeability with regular SBC head bolts.

Yes it is just another SBC far as head bolts are concerned.

Thanks for the reply.

Well I'm not saying ARP's aren't way better, but for my mild builds I'll just be using old, used SBC head bolts from the 60's & 70's that are in my parts laying around.

I agree.

This thread has been the most definitive I have seen with people sharing their experiences and best of all...pics. If some stock 95 engines had the Gizmo pic bolts, then they must have changed during that year. My 95 had the old SBC looking bolts. If I was to judge strictly by looks, I would be inclined to think the Gizmo pic bolts are TTY-ish, LOL!

Are you saying the old sbc bolt had a straight shank vs Gizmo's under cut shank ? I came across an article that stated tty bolts had the undercut shank and that's how you could tell the difference. I also looked up ARP's bolt to find out they are heat treated and also undercut for the "extra stretch" for better sealing. To me that means ARP's are tty also.

Yet the manufacturer ARP says they are not, could be the alloy....
