Default Removing the LT1 intake manifold

As if my car doesn't have enough problems, found a very noisy #1 exhaust valve. Tried to figure out a way to measure valve lift to see what the heck is going on but can't find a way without removing the rockers and I need to move the car before I do that. Listened to all 16 with a dowel stick, all are quiet except for a few minor clicks, 1's exhaust sounds like a hammer. Tightened the poly-lock and it's still banging. Removed the rocker and push rod, all is good EXCEPT found some marks on the retainer. Looks like the rocker arm touched it near the edge. Or they were scratched during installation??

So I'm going to pull the intake and take a look. Any advice or hints I can use to make this less painful? Any help with what's in the rear of the intake I need to deal with besides the oil pump drive? Hard to see back there

Al

shbox.com has a guide to help remove it. It's under the "Cam Removal" portion of the page. It's pretty straightforward.

If I remember right, you should only have the egr stuff on the back of the intake.

It's really not bad, get a small 1/4 ratchet, 3 and 6 inch extensions, 9/16 deep and regular socket and start taking bolts off. You will need a fuel disconnect too if you intend on taking the fuel lines off. If you do that, put a towel around it...gas burns and does not taste good

Did you reset the valve lash on the "hammer" sounding exhaust port? Checked for exhaust leaks around the header?

why not just put a micrometer on the suspect rocker tip and check if you're getting lift you want. It's definitely easier to pull rocker cover the the intake manifold.

Micrometer! I can see it with my eyes. Measured it with a 6 inch scale, at the push rod end of the rocker #1 is 1/8" less than the others. This car is supposed to have LS7 lifters. Whatever they are they sure bleed down quick...

I would go to the valve end as it gives you actual valve lift, but that's me. If it's an 1/8" less on the pushrod side, first thing I would do is pull the pushrods out and make sure they're not bent. Then worry about going down to the lifters.

Easier just to readjust the valve. You won't get an accurate reading with the engine off because the lifters will bleed down.

Pulled the lifters from one and three. Both of number one's are bad. Stuck my finger in the lifter hole and felt the cam, trashed I'll pull all of them later today.

Now I need to try to identify the lifters. I'll post some pictures when I can and see if anyone can identify them.

And, I'll post my cam card and see what you guys think. Off with the front of the engine.....

Was remembering when I was in high school. Could swap the cam in my 56 Chevy in about two hours, start to finish. My how things have changed

Man, have you got THAT right!!! On my first Firebird, in 1977, I could actually look around the engine and see the ground. My father had a '67 Camaro with the straight 6...could do a complete tune up in about 45 minutes!
