Overheating

Overheating Alright, this just started happening today. I have cruising around, and it started getting way hotter than normal. My 1996 Trans Am usually runs around 180 degrees, but today it started running hot. Around 240 while driving. Got to 55 and it finally started to drop, but not much. Got it to a friends house, and turned it off and the temperature sky rocketed to the bottom part of the red. Let it cool all the way down, and took it out again to see how it was running the, and the temperature fluctuates from above 160-above 210. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I don't want to warp these heads, or do any serious damage. Any ideas?
Sounds like its low on coolant or has air in the system.
Check coolant level. Check for leaks in system.
Check for a plastic bag in front of radiator.
Crank with radiator cap off (cold). Make sure the water is circulating.
May want to change the thermostat they are cheap.
If all is well the Radiator may be stopped up.
