Default Piston/Cam Questions.

I am currently building an LT1. I have .100" dome pistons (with standard 2 valve relief), Still going to be using stock heads. Will these pistons work in the LT1? and how much Lift/Duration can i use with these pistons before i have to worry about valve slapping?
Input greatly appreciated.

You need to talk to your builder before we see a post about how you blew up your new engine. i ran a .610 lift on a stock shortblock with no issues but every set up is diffrent. Call Golden engines they can help you out

Why do you want to use a domed piston?

the only reason i was asking about the domed pistons was that i have a brand new set left from a past project. Figured if they would work it would save a few bucks.

What in the hell is a .100 dome?

I'm running domed pistons in my new build and I can tell you the only way to know for sure what the clearance is going to be is to mock it up and MEASURE. No one on here is going to be able to tell you.

That being said, a properly designed aftermarket piston should have enough valve relief to run way more cam than that. These are SBC pistons and there are plenty of much much more radical setups out there that dont have to worry about PTV issues.

Unless you are going to do a full racegas race build and are willing to do something to make the domes fit the chambers or the chambers fit the domes forget it.

The LT1 stuff is small chamber and with good quench and a flatop piston ends up 11.5:1+ in a big hurry, which is a good thing but a dome will go way too far way too fast. Plus as I eluded to it is unlikely the dome and chamber will fit eachother without some tweaking.

The problem is not the compression.

Like stated, with LT1s relatively small chambers you can have some physical issues running a domed piston, especially on larger valve heads. For example, my AFRs have the intake valve literally protruding from the surface of the heads. Along with a long duration cam(which has more effect on PTV then lift), you can run into problems quickly.

You will have to carefully spec the valve events with the cam and measure, measure, measure.

Honestly unless you have the money to spend testing it out I would just sell the pistons and get some traditional -5cc flat tops.

give me the cam you're using, and measure the valve reliefs (.100, .200, etc) and i can get you a ballpark P/V clearance on both sides.
