Default Help/ Opinions from lt1 owners

I'm checking out a 1997 camaro z28 w/119,XXX miles on it, still stock. Test drove it once already and looked it over pretty well. Needs alittle TLC but so what it's what i enjoy. They're asking 6,200 but that will go down probably. My question is besides basic stuff is there anything to check out on these motors/cars thats a dead give away this might not be worth it? I've test driven it once and it ran good, handled great. Plan on going back tomorrow for another test drive/ business talks about it. Wondering what YOU owners would check out before purchasing, thanks.
BTW, this is replacing my 02 Trans am, Rip

Make sure you test drive it for more than a couple of min. Make sure everything cycles through and watch the gauges. After all that check all the fluids. But 6,200 is pretty steep for a lt car. Just my .02.

That seems pretty steep, that's getting into LS price range.

$5,500 sounds good, I'd go for lower if possible, main thing is making sure everything is mechanically sound. By tlc what do you mean?

For that price you might as well get an LSX car. There are a few here in Jersey for around that price...

Alright, little stuff imo. Hatch hydraulics are shot, sun visors need replaced, passengers side door is alittle sun faded i guess but plan on giving the car a fresh paint job regardless eventually. Heat & A/C work great, engine seems sound i'll need to check it out again after i get it on the road alittle longer this time.

With these cars I would take it to a collision center and have them look at it for unreported damage. Make sure it hasn't been nailed at some point and fixed under the table so to speak.

In that condition you could get that for 3500 or cheaper down here.

Yeah sounds like a 3-4k car to me. Tops. I got my 95 with 102K for 3k over four years ago. This guy is asking way too much. Don't pay more than 4K if i were you.

+1 on $4k tops. Although 119k miles is not bad for a 14 yo car, it would have to be fully loaded and in near perfect condition for $6k.

Having done 3 of these cars, 2 in the last 3 years, here's what I've learned:

I'd rather start with a car that needs zero in body work and has a bad motor than an average bone stock car in average condition over 100,000 miles, that needs a little of everything. My first car was a brand new 93 Formula built up to a 383 by a good friend. The second was a 64,000 mile car that still needs body work, in which I spent 130 hours fixing the interior. And I spent a fair amount of coin on a stock bore/stroke H/C/I + boltons rebuild. Third car needs a ton of body work, new dash, though the stock engine replace/rebuild went pretty smooth on a budget, and I've had a lot of fun with it. I never expected it to be pretty anytime soon.

Bottom line: where are your skills best suited to the car you want to have, since you'll be doing the lion's share of the work on it? If you're a good body guy, find one that's ugly but has a stout drivetrain. If you're a skilled engine guy, find a cherry body/interior car and go to town on the motor build. That's my personal preference...

another vote for that being way too much... for even $5k, that car better be in 9/10 shape inside and out and ready to hop in and drive without investing another dime

I paid $2k for my '93 from the original owner with window sticker and all documentation. He was asking $5500 but I politely/respectfully walked around the car with him and showed him everything including fading clearcoat, cracked fender (hidden), torn leather drivers seat, etc that I would end up having to replace and he quickly became reasonable and dropped the price
