opti swap now it wont start

Default opti swap now it wont start

I replaced it with a duralast unit cause my water pump leaked on my old one. Put everything back together and now it wont start it just backfires and makes noises like my crankshaft is hitting something idk how to describe it. I checked all sensors and fuses plug wires and everything is fine. Any ideas on why it work?

Did you put the rotor back how the old one was? When I did my cam swap years ago I thought the little drive gear only went one way. Come to find out it can go on different ways throwing the timing off.

What year is it? 95 or later you may have missed the drive pin in the cam. Can't tell you about the earlier ones. They have a spline drive and I've never played with one.

Hey i also had the same thing.
I replaced my opti when i changed my water pump. I bought a MSD opti though and when i went to crank it, it would sound like the timing was 180 off. It would crank but sounded horrible, like the pistons were beating against the heads and it would die almost instantly.
Well after troubleshooting it forever...i sent it back to MSD and they sent me a new one..and it worked perfect.

Not all new parts are perfect!!!

mine has a spline drive and im fairly certain it will only go in, easily, one way. From what i remember if the spline wasnt lined up correctly the opti would still kind of go on, but it would not seat down and be snug.

Heres a pic thanks to SHbox.com, Not sure the consequences of this, But a easy way to know would be there was a gap between the opti mounting points and the opti.

Mine is just a smooth shaft with two rings and it popped into place right. I just took it apart and put it back together to make sure and nothing I think autozone sent me a bad one

The two plugs that go sort of hooked together that go into the icm, well they each have to prongs that go into the icm. One of the prongs on the black plug is missing. When the car was running I removed that plug and was like wtf what happened here. Could that be what's causing my situation????

That's the coil your are talking about, not the ICM. And yes, there is supposed to be one pin "missing".

The opti must also be indexed correctly. You can't just throw it on any old way.

Ok well now it starts with the new opti but after it warms up it dies. I let it cool of for 15 min and it starts up again the warms up again and turns off again.

I bought an oreilys brand opti that did the same thing your first one did. I took it back and bought an acdelco one then it fired right up.

I used to have a 93 T/A and the spline shaft for the opti WILL NOT ONLY GO IN ONE WAY. I did it a few times and it just fell together , I was sure it was right, I eventually swapped all the parts for a 95 opti on it, but I was bumfuzzled a couple of times with it.

Well if there is a short or a possible weak ground it would not be hot right away, but in a minute or two. But I may be barking up the wrong tree.
