Default ALDL will not connect

Car is having an issue with connecting to a scanner to read what the pcm is doing

Car is a 94 obd1 car
Car has power at the fuse
we jumpered the aldl and the fans cut on
disconnected the pcm and reconnected

Still nothing. The car starts up and runs just fine so the pcm isnt dead or anything crazy like that.

Any idea on what could be going on here.

Thanks

Post what scanner you are trying to use and/or if you have tried more than one.

Does it have an OBDI style connection under the dash or a OBDII style connection? My 95 TA is OBDI but has the OBDII style connector that is non powered so it won't work with an OBDII only scanner. I had to get a code reader that would read both OBDI and OBDII and then buy a special connector for it.

Probably a laptop communication issue. I had to jump through hoops to get my laptop to communicate with the pcm. It's all about what port your using and what software your using. Using windows 7, I had to right click on the software icon, and go to compatability and change to windows xp service pack 2. This was for Tunercats I believe, but I did it for all my tuning/datalogging programs.

Edit: I may have mis-read. You mentioned ALDL so I assume your using a laptop, but if you're using a scanner, then ignore the above.

we have used quite a few different scanners.
We tried:
An OTC 4000 matco tools obd1 scanner
A Genisis techforce scanner
also a laptop that had data master
And I also tried to download freescan on to the lap top and that didnt work either

This is a 94 model year car so it does not have a powered aldl connection on the car

Your 95 DLC does have power to it on pin 16, just like OBD-II. It won't work with an OBD-II only scanner, because it is not OBD-II. It's OBD-I.

Right, but the OP's computer is a 94. I am in the same boat, since its a 94 you cant flash the codes and you cant just hook up any scanner apparently. I have a SES light and a misfire I need to diagnose, but I can't get a scanner to connect to the pcm. I havent tried Freescan and a laptop cable yet, but I'm hesitant to drop 80 bucks on a cable that might not work anyways.

Im having an issue connecting my 94 with a usb aldl cable. The usb drive is either not communicating or is shot. Got my computer wiz buddy working on getting it working. My car has no issue with connecting to scan tools or using serial port tunning cables. Gay usb and old computer not mixing but i need to get it figured out as i would like to do some datalogging and play with my tune.

don't forget to check the fuse for the cigarette lighter. If shorted out, then you will not be able to connect. Also I have a 94 T/A, and last year was having problems connecting, and found one of the grounds by my icm had a bad connection, and after fixing then I could communicate with my pcm again. Just a thought to try.

Wow I thought I read somewhere on here that it didn't. Thanks for the heads up . I have a 95 GMC Jimmy with OBD "1.5"- half OBDI stuff and half OBDII stuff . That's why I had the cable and scanner that would read both lol

Fuse for the cigarette lighter? Would this cause the scanners not to connect?

If the scanner requires that power, yes.
