I didn't realize the Callaway was such a turd.
Could not agree more. The enthusiasm for the ZR1 went the way of the dodo bird shortly after being discontinued, hell maybe even before...

I live very close to a man that has been given the nick name the ZR1 king. Apparently people have sent him these engines from all over the U.S. to be built. He uses a local machine shop that has a lot of experience with the LT5 for all his work. He owns one of the fastest NA ZR1's that I have ever seen. He runs it every year at the C4 gathering at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling green KY. Apparently he kicks everybody’s *** with it. He has wanted to get in touch with me to help with tuning on these things but I just haven’t had time. Let me know if you want his info.

To the OP:
I would hog the fuggg out of those heads. Bigger valves...the expensive quality ones with all that fancy swirl chit. Rework the intake ports. as well as exhaust...hand or cnc port the bowls. Rework the intake manifold to port match after opening up as much as possible.
And find the biggest headers you can slap on that thing.
This platform is designed to have an incredible breathing capacity. There's no way you can get by without slapping a supercharger on that thing. It has all the volumetric capacity for it.
I dont see how this thing cant output 600hp with SC easy.
And yes it is your duty becuz im almost certain supercharger fanatics wish they had this kind of flow capacity. You dont have to step on it and you can drive it real pretty just the same.
But you do have to finish what Chevrolet started. This is a cool concept that they axed in favor of the LSx engines and upping cubic inches. A very bold and classic to old school style chevy thinking.
Ford did the opposite and had some success. Now they are trending to slap superchargers on their dual cam versions.
This engine was an initial test bed. Sort of an uncomplete not entirely explored concept.
This beastling needed it's manifold tweaked. And eventually a SC slapped to the top of it right from factory.
Don't forget to upgrade its injectors to newer versions with the split cone spray pattern and much quicker pulse timing.
Nevermind the haters.....finish the job Chevrolet started.
Even if you think you dont want the SC right now....dont cap that puppy up without re-doing and opening that top end to it's maximum.....so if you change your mind........all thats missing is the SC.
Finiiiiish it!!!!!!!!! FiniiiiiiiIIIIIIIssssshhhh ITTTTT!!!!!!! (green goblin to aunt may as she's praying)

The Sledgehammer was a standard SBC turbo'd and built by Lingenfelter for Callaway. Not the LT5.

Here's the fairly poor performance of that era's injectors on this ahead of it's time engine.

You'd want to go with the LS1 injectors.
