Here is the hole, it's an oil passage.

you guys are looking at it wrong (i did at first too) the hole isn't going towards the front of the motor. its going down. i just went and took a picture of my old shortblock for you guys. OP there should be a plug down in there

It's definitely a factory thing. Everyone open up your How to rebuild small block Chevy LT1/LT4 engines book and look at the picture on page 137 (if the picture above is not enough proof). It ain't no secret hole put there by some yahoo with a drill.

WOW....holy optical illusion.........yea thats suposta be there lol........the plug is just probably leaking.....if the plug was missing you would definatly know about it trust me lol

sorry about the confusion everyone i meant to put up more pics but got side tracked haha, since it is a plug and obviously appears to be leaking a bit, is there a place where i can buy the plug in question? thanks for the help btw, because i had no idea what was going on lol

The oil is probably not coming from that plug, but just remove it, apply new sealant and re-install it.

^what he said.

the head cover's half of the hole so there's no way the plug could back out, and if it was missing you'd be losing a lot more oil. just put new sealant on it if you're taking the heads off

Na it cant be a plug.

looks to me like that would be the oil port to keep the rear of the intake/trans bellhousing/anything under it well lubricated. I beleive GM did this to cut down on rust in those areas.

On stick shift cars it's there to insure clutch chatter.

Al 95 Z28 engine is ready to drop in.
