Default Considering 4.10s

I am considering getting 4.10s and was wondering a couple things. Is there a better brand than another? Do I need to get specific ones? I was seeing on the ws6store that there is a "4.10 gear set" and a "4.10 gear set (2 series carrier)". Can anyone tell me which one I need or does the rear cover have to be taken off to figure that out? Thanks guys

2 series carrier is if your car came with 2.73s

IIRC, a 2 series carrier is for a car that had 2:73's. A 3 series carrier is all others, 3:23's, 3:42's. Its been a long time since I installed 4:10's in my old stock rear. GM 4:10's seem to be the preferred choice, that's what I went with. I assume your an M6? If so, that is the perfect gear choice. Massive sotp feeling, it gets off the line much harder with them. Your next mod will be dr's

I have some drag radials that I use at the track already. The stock 3.42s just aren't enough to get my 60' as fast as I want it. 2.198 isn't acceptable.

With dr's and 4:10's you should be able to hit a much better 60, if you have a good clutch it should be under 2.0 at least. It takes more suspension work to get it lower. Lca's and relo brackets help a lot, along with a good torque arm.

Yea, I know I should do some suspension stuff as well, but gears are higher on the list. The clutch is a competition stage 2.5. My 60' improved a tenth just because of not having a stock POS clutch. So, I am trapping 103.5 now... What could I expect to trap with 4.10s (about).

Just last week I ran my car at the strip after installing 4.10s this spring. My best 60' on street tires with a dry hop was 2.041. Last year with 3.42s my best was 2.2something. 4.10s work great for me.
I'm under the impression they don't help the mph though, I could be wrong.

What were you running before/after gears?

Okay here they are for all the world to see that I need a 'driver mod'.

Last year, 14.604 @96.19, 2.249 60', 14.697 @ 97.45, 2.284 60' ( 3rd gear through traps)
Last winter/spring added SLP midlength 1 3/4 headers, no cat and 4.10 gears.

Aug 10 Great Lakes Dragaway DA 1900 ft
14.198@100.21 2.041 60' (oops transposed 60' numbers in post above)
14.379@100.86 2.291 60'
14.345@100.25 2.228 60'
one run I missed 3rd on but had a 2.074 60'

I was pretty happy, the headers gained me 3.4mph untuned and the 4.10s picked up my 60' about .2 Everything else about the car was the same year over year.

^^^ Guppy, no offense but are you sure your car is running right? I assume you must at least have a cai too, with those mods you should be in the mid to low 13's. With just a cai I ran a 13.9, car was bone stock otherwise. Have you changed plugs & wires lately? Does it have any misses through out the rpm range?

Gregg, I have a LPE CAI, lt4 km and some free mods. The car has 5k on new delphi opti and gm plug wires. I feel the car runs great. My et's might not be so good but the MPHs I've been running would get me the ETs you mentioned. I bet your 13.9 et was at around 98 mph and my 100.86 mph on a car set up for the drags would be mid to low 13's. My runs were made on Continental Extreme Contacts (far from a drag racing tire). That said I am going to get a new tune from madtuner for the gear and header install, hopefully I will pick up another 1 or 2 mph out of that.
Thanks for your help with the header gaskets last winter.

Tom

Your mph isn't too bad, I know street tires aren't much good at the track. A good tune will certainly help too. No problem with the gasket info, these slp mid's are a really nice header IMO. Add a nice cam and a good tune someday to your setup and it will feel like a whole different car.

M6+DR's+4.10's+dragstrip = blown up ten bolt.

Has them in my '97 Z, blew up two rears.

but it sure is fun as hell while it lasts. One of the best mods to do to an M6 car. It'll actually make 6th useable on the freeway.
mine will be getting 4.10's when the motor goes back in(in the stock 10 bolt).

Are you dumping the clutch on slicks or clutching it off the line?

Having had the 10bolt blues more than once, I'd save your money and get a better rear end, especially if the car sees any track time. I will say both of my 10bolts took a dumb on the street.
