Default Question About Stroker Rod Lengths...

I have been working on a 383 Stroker build and I have been getting mixed signals about the length of the connecting rods I should use. Some people say use 5.700" and others say 6.000" but I have no idea why, so I would like to learn and make my own decision from that!

What is the difference between them besides the obvious? Why use a longer rod? Why not? Advantages/disadvantages? Power difference? Workload difference? Please excuse the lack of knowledge....I am new to the Stroker world.

on a 6 rod the wrist pin is further up in the piston than a 5.7 piston rod combo. The 5.7 pistonx area is stronger since there is more meat on the piston wrist pin area since it is further down the piston skirt area. I have always used a 5.7 rod and piston combo and have never had a piston crack or wrist pin area. The 6 rod has more stress on it as well from being a little longer and can sometimes have issues spinning in the high rpms.

So what is the reason for using a 6 rod then? If people take that risk there must be a benefit right?

6" rods offer more dwell time and offer less side-loading then their 5.7" counterparts. Granted there is less meat on top of the piston, but for a mild/medium N/A build I'd go with the 6".

I would do a Google search on the topic. There are several articles explaining the benefits and disadvantages of both.

Best setup is a 5.85" rod. Decent compromise between the 5.7"/6.0" rod.

I used a 5.85" rod on my latest 383 buildup. Couldn't be happier with the performance. Not very common, but available.

Which pistons would a 5.85" rod use? Are there 5.85 pistons?

You can get any piston you want if you call. I run JE now and have also used SRP and Wisco pistons. They should all be able to get you pistons for what ever you want.

I used SRP -16cc pistons for 5.85" rods. They are off-the-shelf and the only caveat is they have a +.010" install height compared to ones for a 5.7" or a 6.0" rod. Part number is 146997.

I have built motors with 5.7" and 6.0" rods, this was my first with a 5.85" rod and by far, my favorite. The pins do not intrude into the lower oil ring gap like they do on a 6.0" rod, but you get the advantages of a longer rod than a 5.7"... Again, seems to be the best of both worlds.

Going to a longer rod will also slow the piston speed down and allow the piston to handle higher rpms/power. Also the side loading on the cylinder walls make block wear less. More advantages than disadv.

+1

Have used 6" rods on three stroker builds.
