Default Reading engine codes

When my friend gave me my current 94 T/A he also gave me a 2 pronged key. He said I could get the engine codes to flash on the ses light if I used it. Well now my ses light is on and the car is running like crap but none of the local parts stores have the connetor for the obd1. Can I jump the connector or do I need a scanner? I would just like a place to start on figuring out why its running so rough.

Before you go throwing cash into random sensors and cheap scanners buy this cable at http://www.aldlcable.com/. Get TTS datamaster, your car being a 94 you probably have the 12 pin ALDL. With this software you can get a datastream from your PCM while running.

Can't use the "key" that shorts the pins to flash codes. You can on a 93 f-body LT1, but not later.

Well thanks for the info. Is there any free software that I can download and run on my Mac that will let me read my trouble codes?
