Default lt1 startup issues

ok guys, so i last drove my 95 firehawk two weeks ago. it drove/ran fine the entire outing. yesterday i hoped in hopes of hitting up a local cruise in and at first it didn't want to crank. after several rotations it finally fired up and ideled high (like 1400rpm) for a bit then died out.

i tried to get it to run but every time it did the same thing... took several rotations to crank, then ideled high, then died. when i gave the car gas to try and keep it running it backfired through the intake like it's loading up or something. i haven't looked into the problem much yet- just hoping to hear some helpful feedback.

thanks in advance!

the car does have a pesky exhaust leak during warm up that seals itself off once the engine reaches operating temp. but i wouldn't think this would cause the type of problem i'm witnessing?

also, i remembered that both of my fans came on as soon as the car was running- shouldn't do that on a cold start @ idel right!?

But check the code first, it will at least point you in the right direction. If it's P0171/P0174 then start looking for a vacuum leak.

x's 3 with the vaccum leak. Did you do something significant before this problem occured? Ex) Burnout, speed run, or anything else at a higher RPM?

naw, just ordinary driving... best i can remember anyway lol. my buddy said his mom's escape did about the same thing and he took the IAC out and cleaned it and the car ran good as new afterwards (not sure if it threw the SES light though). i'm going to try this first i reckon. formula413, thanks for the the code numbers. i'll definalty be looking out for those.

Usually indicates the opti. The high resolution pulse is intermittent, so the optical sensor is going bad, is dirty, blocked, etc., or you've got some corrosion in the opti connector/harness. Fortunately BOTH scenarios are equally possible.
