Pretty sure you didn't hurt anything. What kind of car is it? Check your firing order and make sure all plug wires are on the right plugs. That's about the only thing that'll cause a big backfire. Now.........go change your shorts and get back to work.

Don't feel bad anyone who says they haven't ever screwed up their wires on the plugs is probably lieing! The opti is numbered near the wire terminals just follow each wire and make sure it's going to the correct cylinder. Remember the front on the DS is 1 then 3,5,7 towards the firewall and the front on the PS is 2 then 4,6,8.
