Default @#@$^ optispark?

Hello all, just a quick question to toss out and see if anyone has had the same issue. Over the past few weeks my TA's been getting a bit sluggish off the line and feels as if its surging while at a sustained rpm or speed. It also backfires but its not a constant thing.

It was rebuilt in 2010 and i've put about 3000 miles on it, so I know or hope, its not an engine issue. I've replaced the ICM,ignition coil, it has 30# injectors, gm MAF, plugs and wires and still it has this surge and lack of power etc. What im looking at now is a possible opti issue. I opted for the accel opti after that is what I read some good reviews on and what the local speed shop recommended. So now what ive found is accel optis are junk. Any truth to that?

Accel opti is ****, avoid it like like a STD. I had one years ago and it had sparks shooting out of the cap and into the water pump meaning the cap was not well insulated. Also the pulse wheel rubbed the optical sensor. Use a GM opti and hope for the best.

Having a look at the engine bay in the dark is always a good idea when you suspect an ignition issue.

I wouldn't freak about an opti going south right away. I had the same issues a few years ago and I still think I got some bad gas. Cleared up after a new tank of gas. I'd do the normal troubleshooting like ckecking the fuel pressure, spark plugs, the wires before a teardown for the opti.

Amen to that. MY 98 S-10 started running like crap one day. Figured it was a plug wire, it wasn't. Pulled the plugs, did a compression check, all OK. WTF, so I decided to change the fuel filter, soon as I cracked the nut I found the problem. Water in the fuel. Got about a quart out of the tank, put in a gallon of E85 and five gallons of gas and it's as good as new.

As LT! Vette said, start with the basics and don't start changing things until you know they're bad.

The fuel pressure is finally where it needs to be,the shop I had it in set it way too low which cost me a set of plugs. All of the sensors were replaced during rebuild so I imagine it wouldn't be that. As far as spraking or arching I haven't seen any at night time. I haven't craked the fuel filter yet but that's on tap for Monday evening. I had issues with my previous blaster coil, I replaced it with MSD's street series. I'm wondering if the coil the speed shop had in their system was incorrect and is possibly not capabke of supporting the ignition?

sounds like an opti to me..I've have dozens of them..and dozens of issues too..
all the remans are crap..stay away from them..also.. upgrade to a vented one if yours isn't..
the original GM ones are good ones..but only if you put on an MSD cap and rotor..
I don't know how many stock rotors I have broken..
last motor I built..I couldn't find a new GM one..
so I bought a new MSD billet complete..expensive but absolutely no issues..

I'm about to put an opti in my car as well, but mine stutters and dies after it gets hot randomly. I'm going with a Standard Opti with a warranty, by the time the warranty is done I'll have sold the car. The dealer here wants over 600 for a new Delphi opti, would be interested to know where to get one thats under 300.

well yes, but we do have an idea to mod the OPTI to work with the 411. It wont be an OPTI anymore, but you also will not have the OPTI issues. The actual mod to the OPTI should be around $100 or less in parts. LEXTECH has the wiring for this worked out using the stock LT wiring to 411 ECU. All that is needed is a test bed!
