Default 4L60E with no first gear option

I have a 94 z28 with an A4 that came from the factory with no first gear option. I already swapped my 273 gears to 342s. I searched for other threads on this topic and all I could find was threads talking about transmission's completely missing the first gear lol. I was wondering what I have to do to get the first gear option on my trans. Any help is appreciated thanks....

Transgo manual shift kit?

Tons of 4L60e's around. You can get them cheap and swap one in of you want.

Remove shift ****, remove center console, remove stopper that stops transmission from being put into 1st, reinstall console, reinstall shift ****, done.

You can also pick up a 94-96 auto bezel so it shows the first gear option as well.

Exactly what i did, I cut mine off with a putty knife and a few taps from a hammer. Its a small square stopper, hard to miss.

Can take a picture if you want me to OP

I am surprised you did not find anything with a search. The question is a common one. Once you open up the plate on the console, it will be obvious what is blocking the lever from going back to 1st. Just cut the tab off.

Does anyone know why the factory put the tab in to block first gear in the first place?
Seems strange to design it that way.

Noise laws, they measured Db at 40mph? in the lowest select-able gear which for a 3.23 geared car is impossible to get to in first, so in second it would pass, but for the 2.xx cars you can easily go 40 in first and would fail the Db test, so they had to restrict it from being used.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I didn't know it was that easy. Thought I had to get a different trans lol. Thanks again for the replies and help. That noise law sucks for us 273 stock guys lol. But I love my 342s i swapped in. Thinking about going to 373s though. Still not sure, read there's not that much of a difference though. O and by the way how do I get the shift **** off? Sorry for the noob question.

Ok I got it, easy enough. I'll do the mod as soon as I get my car back from my friend that's working on it right now.

One extra piece of advice, put some cloth or tape underneath the block to catch any shavings when you're hacking at it. I did mine with just the blade from a hack saw.

Perfect, because I failed and didnt put the pic up yesterday lol

here you go, best pictures I could get, and no need for whole console, just the shifter face plate thing.

See the metal stop? you can see the outline of the plastic stop I removed with the putty knife, that is all that prevents you from selecting first. I was frequent to first gear in my car after the mod lol

and I know my cars dirty, last time i cleaned it was a year ago?...
