I find that if I pull the thermostat housing and fill the block all the way up and then fill the rest through the radiator cap it bleeds easier. You may need a gasket if you pull the thermo housing. I don't put the cap on until after the thermostat has opened and and the radiator stays full or even over flows a bit. Then I put the cap on, fill the reservoir and run it down the road normal. As long as the temp gauge stays in a normal range I park it after a short run and let it cool all the way down. I then top off the radiator and top off the reservoir and just check it over the next couple days when the engine is cold.

I do check the cold level for a couple of days afterward, but I open the bleeders during filling and rarely have to do anything further.
