Need to put the shifter in low gear, then get under the car and match the cable and shifting lever on the trans. Mount the cable to the shifter arm at this point. Then get back in the car move the shifter to second gear. Get back under the car, remove the cable from the trans shifter lever, make sure it doesnt bind up when moving it in and out of the mounting hole on the trans shifter lever. Once you line up your low gears, the rest should line up also. If all else fails, after adjusting the low gears, put the shifter in park with the cable mounted...recheck the cable for binding when being pushed in and out of the mounting hole on the shifter lever. The shifting lever should not move once the cable is removed from it. If it does, its still out of alignment. Put the rearend on jackstands off the ground, start the car and run it through the gears. Be sure you use your brake to stop the wheel speed before going in reverse or park. Hope that helps...has always worked for me.
