My '96 Six Speed
Instead of working on the car, I've been shopping for a second gen body. I think, I want to build a second gen. I was hoping to find a nice shell around 2grand. I've seen a couple, but I think I can find better.
Lately I've been looking at $3G to $4G cars & they appear to be closer to what I'm looking for. Still haven't pulled the trigger, I'm still trying to figure out what I want.
I used to think the drive train was the only concern, but after sitting in a couple of these cars & remembering driving my '78. These cars have come a long, long way. Yeah, I'm a sissy & I like my creature comforts, I like the feel of the stearing, the reduction in wind noise, the power windows & locks, etc... and a bunch of little things.
I know I can upgrade all of that on a second gen. & I'd like to. I just don't think I'm ready for that kind of investment now. So I'm leaning towards altering the parameters of my '96 rebuild. Won't be as extensive as I originally planned. Then get a second gen & start working on it.
Time is the issue, to get a second gen like I want, it's going to take a lot of time & money, a two or three year build.
The problem with that is the six speed. One way or another, I'd like a six speed to be part of my second gen project. They go for at least $1600 if you can find one outside of the car. Probably won't get much more than that for my '96 as it sits, or even running. So I'm thinking I might as well keep it & sell the body.
But the LT1 six speed won't fit an LSx if I decide to go that route for my second gen, which most likely is where I will end up.
You're right, I won't get the money or time back that I invest in the LT1 car. However, If I do like I planned, & drive it till I get the second gen going, I think it'll work out.
Like I said, I'm much earlier into the process than I thought I was. Thanks for your comments as you (& everyone else here) are helping me think this thing through.
Either way do what YOU want to do. Personally I would keep this. I would assume parts will be more readily available. Again, it's up to you. Just my opinion.
