Starter binding...HELP!

Starter binding...HELP! 93 T/A A4...turn key click, click. No start, get under car bendix is engaged and stuck against flywheel. I take a slim screw driver and tap it back and rotate flywheel. Try it again, and same thing. So i get some shims and put in 2 1/32, no change. Then i try another 32ths and it starts, but it screeches when it starts. Try starting a few more times and it F'N sticks again. I put in a few more shims till it is spinning freely cause it's to much. Then i back off a couple thou and it starts and i think im good. HELL NO!! same thing starts 3-5 times then binds. WHAT THE HELL!!! i ran this starter for 6 months flawlessly. Now all the sudden this. Sorry for the rant but i am pissed, been under this car all day. Any help would be great! Thanks. Marc
