My pacesetters were very close after I installed new poly mounts. Their y-pipe seems like an afterthought.

Heard the same complaints about Hooker y-pipes. Best thing to do is have one custom fabbed for the application.

I'm not arguing if more expensive headers fit well, what I'm saying is for the price difference of 750+ I'm ok with banging on the Y pipe a little.

Correct big hammer mod , I clearanced the y and floor perhaps a total of an 1/8 inch

Another thing to look at is the alignment of the Y pipe its self, Its shaped kinda funny and easy to get on slightly crooked. I know I had to put the Y on a couple times before I got it where I was happy with it.

As for poly vs rubber, can't honestly tell you, my stock rubber were shot and replaced them with poly. I can promise with the stock mounts the way they were it would have hit MUCH worse.

I agree with the Y pipe being an after thought.

I've never had or seen a problem with the Hooker pipe if installed properly. The cheap headers aren't as likely to seal as well or last as long. Invariably, when I have a customer with fuel trim problems due to leaky headers at the flange they are always the cheapies. The #1 slip joint on the Hooker long tubes sometimes leaks, very easy to seal. Never had a leak problem with Hedmans.

My hooker y-pipe didn't fit either, and that's way before their quality went to complete **** in the last few years. Now you couldn't pay me to run anything hooker. Now I'm running a custom y-pipe with a magnaflow merge.

And I would much rather have a slip join collector and gain that 1/3" of ground clearance back and not have the collector grab on speed bumps.

Honestly you would think after 20 years the aftermarket would be able to get it closer. I would never feel right putting a set of Kooks or Lemons on a street car. On the race car we built our own, a universal Headman set with adapter flanges. It's funny that my 68 has more ground clearance than my 94 ever did.

Even if it is of the best quality some of us run a torque arm that mounts to the chassis. When I was inquiring about a hooker y-pipe I called them and asked if they were familiar with how their y-pipes fit with a certain torque arm brand. They said they had no idea and could not guarantee if it would contact the torque arm's tunnel brace or not. No way was I going to spend the money on something like that and then have to take it in to get it "massaged" in order to fit. Would have cost more than just having one made. These stories have been around since aftermarket companies of any kind have been offering pre-made y-pipes.

i ran pace setters long tubes for about 3 years with not one problem. they fit right in with no hammering or anything. and that was on stock mounts

and right now im running solid engine mounts on my lt1 for about 3 years and i havent had any issues other than i had to grind the driver side down to clear my knock sensor for my 24x conversion.( i have two knock sensors) and to get to the bell housing bolts are kinda of a bitch. im lucky i have small hands to reah back there.

You would think they could make two sets alike, wouldn't you? :-)

Hedmans are the best Off-the-shelf headers I've found. All TIG welded,
thick, non-leaking flanges and always fit great. Hooker spark plug access is better.
Only complaint I have with Hedman is plug access.

Cheaper headers with thinner flanges will give you something to do as long as you have them: Keeping gaskets from leaking.

Have had pacesetters since 04. Have not had one problem. They are an ok header for the money but the y pipe is junk. They have nice 3/8'' flanges that are flat ground after welding. I have never had a leak, have had them on and off many many times and have only had two sets of gaskets the entire time. Plug access could be a little better on a few holes but what can you expect they are headers. The coating is a little weak, they rusted here in az and car really never sees rain. I took them back and had them recoated under their warranty and this time around they seem to be holding up better. Said they changed vendors due to that issue. My car was one of a few that was used for test fitting/ mock up. They never hit even with broken stock mounts but was running a poly trans. After I discovered the broken mounts and the aftermath to the floor I switched to pro thane poly. It sucked getting them tightened in the clamshell and it is a little harder to put the main bolts in now. I did not notice a huge difference in vibration and there are no funny noises. Poly all the way
