Where to start?

Where to start? So my room mate has a 1993 LT1 Camaro. When we bought it all it needed was a new Optispark and an ignition control module.
Got both those replaced and about 200 miles after we blew the head gasket, my only guess was that the car sat way to long, the guy did say he bought the car from a dealer that way in hopes to fix it up. he had since ben in the oil feilds for about 4 months after buying the car, he bought the car not running so only god knows how long the car hadnt been running.
Sence the replacing of the head gaskets about 3 months ago, she hasnt ran right. i always contributed it to be that it has a flow master muf dumped right after the axle.
Always smelled rich of gas.. well just about a month ago been having intermiten transmission issues of it not down shifting at WOT.
Also have been having a starting issue where you have to crank on it or sometimes give it some gas, inturn i have adjusted the throttle cable, this has resulted in backfiring...
Can i get some places to start? if we had the money i would defenitly do an LS1 swap lol
but for now i need some help, just tonight i pulled the computer to see if it was chipped, it is not.
