Default MSD cap & rotor vented?

My '94 Formula has a nonvented opti. Someone suggested, to save money from doing the conversion, to go to AutoZone and pick up an MSD cap & rotor for about 55 bucks because they have a vented cap. Is that true?

Yea you can do it, I have a vented 95-97 MSD opti on mine, I think it definately helps them last longer, 7 years 40k here.

Add about a $100 to that, 'cause that is what they cost.

IIRC the cap has a vent nipple......and the metal back base of the Opti has one. So just replacing a non vented opti with a vented cap doesn't get you there

The MSD cap and rotor kit for the "unvented" opti does add vents

The MSD kit is not the same as just a replacement vented cap that you get at the auto parts store. It has the inlet and outlet incorporated into the cap.

The MSD kit adds cross-venting by way of the isolator and cap. The isolator is the middle plastic piece between the rotor and the EM shield underneath. MSD's piece has a nipple here and on the cap. You can vent your own by doing this with a couple of vacuum fittings in the same places, and either grab the vacuum harness from the boneyard, GM or Ebay. It cost me $5.00 for the harness off a boneyard 95 Fleetwood with low miles and about $4.00 for the vacuum fittings. Sealed the fittings with black permatex.

Writeup in my sig, I made it harder than it needed to be with the cap fitting, need to update it with the one I just did with a single fitting in the cap and isolator...

That is just fine if you want to go through the trouble of disassembling everything just to reassemble without doing basic tuneup parts replacement.

OP will need to get a vent harness as noted to go along with his "MSD vent conversion" Cap and tap into a vac fitting on intake manifold and drill another in the rubber intake elbow for the vent harness

It comes with a vent harness and vacuum "T" to share an existing manifold fitting. As well as instructions on how to tap into the fresh air for the feed.

Quit trying to be helpful when you are clueless and only serve to muddy the waters.

Thought we all assumed we were talking new cap and rotor... like the ones I used in my writeup. Heck, you can get a new OE style 95 & up cap & rotor kit and just vent the isolator, for that matter.
