Default AC Compressor

Among other things that I'm replacing on my car, I need to put an AC Compressor on. My question is, I don't have the capability to recharge the system after I replace the compressor. After I get everything back together, is it going to hurt the compressor to drive it down to a friends shop for a recharge since it won't have oil or Freon. If its not recommended, whats the best DIY way to recharge the system without breaking the bank.

It won't hurt a thing to drive the car / run the engine with the compressor bolted in place, but empty. As long as the compressor clutch isn't engaged (which it shouldn't be, with an empty system), no harm will come.

The compressor will probably come with some oil in it so let them know if it does. There's usually instructions that come with the compressor. Mine said to turn it by hand so many times before installing it just to circulate the oil. Make sure to flush out the system good and put a new accumulator on also.

Yes, clean your system out and put a new accululator, I cannot stress a new accululator enough! Remember any junk that is in that old accumulator goes right into your new compressor.

My new AC Delco just came in. No instructions other than a sheet that says no switch or switch install. Says nothing about oil. Anything I should do or look out for? I'm going to put it in and then run over to a friends shop a couple of days after.

Found another sheet that says... Shipped with no oil. It states that I must remove oil from old compressor, measure and then put exact amount in new compressor. If I'm having my buddy evacuate and recharge, will I need to do this?

My 1996 GM F-Body Service Manual (page 1B-17) says the system requires 8 oz of PAG oil in total, and they call out the following component replacement specifications:

Compressor = 1 to 2 oz
Receiver / Dryer = 1 oz more than drains out of the old unit.
Evaporator = 3 oz
Condenser = 1 oz

I hope this helps!

The compressor I bought from AZ had a tag stating it had all required oil and to just manually spin the compressor about five times before installing.

Yes, you are supposed to drain the old oil and fill the new compressor with new oil of that amount. If the old compressor isn't available, pour in the amount posted above.
