Question coolant overflow upgrade

I'm wanting to replace the stock overflow tank with a smaller (like 20oz) catch can. I'm wanting to mount it in front of the rad instead of the factory location. The coolant level in the stock can hasn't changed in years so im assuming it only sends coolant to the overflow if there is a pressure problem in the system somewhere? Is the rad actually sending and sucking back coolant and me just not noticing?
Can someone who has done this please share some info?

I think what I should have asked is how much coolant is displaced to the overflow when that process occurs and would a smaller catch can mounted a lil lower function like the stock overflow?

Yes, coolant is added and removed from the reservoir during normal operation. You can gauge how much by measuring the amount indicated by the hot and cold levels in the tank.

mmmk. thank you. i'm just going to leave it since the can I wanted to run would be too small and doesn't have a fill hole.

I have a universal summit catch can, plumb the hose to the bottom and leave the top port open. Radiator will pull and add to it as it needs.

Really need to relocate it to the trunk though.

Thanks, do you recall the capacity of the can your running or the factory can?
I cant find info on the capacity of the factory piece. I think I can run a smaller can, less coolant in it, still never suck air back to the rad, it not blow coolant out of the system, and move the can.
