Trying to go fast with a stock bottom end, advice?
hyper..
you asked the ? and all say the 847 is not the best cam choice.
Like any forum you get what you get when asking "what if" ?'s. I suggest you contact Lloyd Elliott or AI about a cam. They both are more qualified than our opinions.
Consider the condition of your stock bottom end....seriously...before making motor modifications that will need high RPM to get the max potential from a cam choice.

There are a couple proven formulas for making good power and going fast N/A on a stock bottom.
Get a set of really good ported GM LT1 heads and then select a cam that will make the power you want, set up and tune it well and you're there. Yea, there's quite a bit of details that go along with that, but it's all a known quantity. Look around a bit on here and you'll see several guys who are making great power on the stock bottom with heads/cam setups. Pick their brains a bit, take their advice, and go for it. Don't try to re-invent the wheel and with a setup like this, don't bother with aftermarket head castings.
The rod bolts are the weak point, yes, but the stock bottom will usually tolerate spinning it to 6600 or so as long as you don't do it on a daily basis.
I'm running a AI heads/cam setup on the stock bottom and the pill is set at 6600, though I very seldom spin it past 6k on the street. At that point I've generally either already blown the tires away or worked up enough on the speedometer to get me into serious trouble with the law.

What options are out there for rod bolts? Do all of them require the rods to be resized? I know Katech makes bolts for LS1 rods that dont require a resize so Im curious what the LT1 has to offer.
After posting this I am learning that the 847 might be a lil "big" for my set up at the moment. So I may look at the 846 or the best option would be a custom grind as it can be tailored to all that I have and plan to do at the time of install
I also found this post VERY informative for anyone learning along with me in this thread:
