Default MSD Ignition Upgrade

I have a MSD 6AL that I got for very cheap. If I got the MSD blaster coil and some MSD plug wires to go along with it, would it be a significant upgrade over the stock ignition system? I have heard mixed reviews, some say upgrade, some say keep the stock ignition.

The stock coil is fine, leave it alone. Plug wires don't really NEED upgraded, nor do they need to be MSD, plenty of other options. The ONLY reason you should need an ignition box is for pulling timing or any other features it may have. Hotter spark is not good for the Opti, and yes it does just fine on it's own. If you don't plan on spraying, get rid of that box. I'm not sure what options the 6AL has.

Would be a step backwards unless you need spark based rev limit for timing retard for nitrous or boost.

Ive been running my 6al2 box for 3 years no problems, i use the rev limiter, 2 step, and tach output for my shift light. I also use the msd streetfire coil and wires since 09. You already own the stuff why not put the wires and coil in. Msd box id wait to have a pnp harness, if not use it on your truck build

He doesn't have the coil or wires. Wasted money unless they need replacement.

I'm from Hicksville, Ohio. My dad has an old reg cab long bed 1986 chevy 1 ton that just sits there. So I decided I'm going to build a pulling/dirt drag truck. I'm going to box and brace the frame on it. It has a corporate 14 out back and a dana 60 upfront, both rocking 4.56's. Going with a Detroit locker out back and an electric locker up front. I'm also going to build the turbo 400. (Thinking about building a 4l80e but I don't know yet). It's got a np205 which I will upgrade even though they are basically bullet proof already. Then its got an 80,000 mile 454 with it. I'll just add some arp hardware to the bottom end because I can't afford to fully build the engine right now. My uncle has some decent heads and a pretty nasty cam laying around for it. Then I'm going to put a 4 in. lift out back and slam the front on a set of 33's or 35's. Its basically going to be a budget build that hopefully does pretty well.

Thats cool, We are in central KY and pull 2 super mods. One has a 540 BBC With a th400 tranny and a 1271 Blower. The other is a keith Black hemi with a 1471 blower. Pullin is fun. We usually make around a dozen or so pulls a year and usually 1 or 2 in the winter

Sweet! Sounds like your trucks are putting down some serious power. When I get out of college and can afford it I want to get into pulling a lot more than I can right now. I want to hopefully be competitive in both the diesel and gas classes around here.
