Default quick oil question

Putting my engine together and I'm looking at the oil cooler that goes before the oil filer. Is it really worth keeping it? How beneficial is it? I don't care either way just inquiring on how many of you like it or kept it?

I deleted mine. Never really had a need for it. Besides, it de clutters stuff, oil psi may bump up some, and my headers wouldn't fit with it, personally I don't think you'll notice a significant difference with or with out it.

What year is your car? A lot of people put that type of information into their signature.

The early model oil coolers were supposedly better than the later models, but the impression I have is that most people remove them.

I have a 1994, I figured removing it wouldn't make a difference, plus I have to have headers. Anyone else have more insight???

It was never the most efficient oil cooler to begin with. If you use synthetic, it's really not needed. The oil cooler option was even dropped after 1995.

Just another component to fail. Leave it off.

I'm not over thinking it, just wondering if it worked. Who doesn't want their engine running cooler.

If it was a decent air/fluid heat exchanger that worked, sure I would leave it, but its a OE junky cooler with small size lines and is a source of leaks.

The stock "coolers" on these cars simply circulated coolant from the cold side of the radiator to the oil filter mount. No oil actually went to the radiator for real cooling.

If you were to overheat the car, the oil would get HEATED by this setup.

If you feel you need an oil cooler on this car, get an aftermarket setup from makers such as Trans-Dapt or Derale. It'll come with a block to filter adapter, hose and a cooler to mount up front. If you have headers, slip some fire sleeving on the hoses down there.

Make sure you get lines at least 1/2 inch in diameter and a plate style cooler. The tube style coolers suck.

Good luck!

A lot of people speculated that the oil cooler was of more benefit as on oil heater in colder climates.
