Default Counter Balanced?

My (used) 97 LT1 originally came with a harmonic balancer that was counter balanced, I think, because it had a piece of metal in one of the holes. I read in the Factory repair manual that this is a requirement in order to avoid vibrations. When I replaced the flywheel it was also counter weighted.
None of the replacement balancers have this counter weight in them!
Are Caprice dampners interchangeable? Any why the counter weights? I thought all of these engines were intermally balanced. Thank You!

They are internal front external rear in other words the balancer is neutral balanced and the flexplate/flywheel is weighted. Just because an item has a balance pad or similar doesn't mean it is not neutrally balanced since the pad/item may have been needed to make it neutral.

To be more clear the rear weight is "standard" and the fine tuning done internal.

That's a bit odd for Chevrolet isn't it?
Did i misread the specs for this engine when I thought Iread that the clearances at teh rear of the crank are wider than those at the front?
This 97 model engine sure is an interesting mill!

The rear main bearing is the thrust bearing on both gen 1 and 2 so the clearance would need to be a little wider because there is more surface area and it's directly connected to the load.
