Default final drive ratio dilemma

Currently the car has 4.56's and was complemented nicely with a 27" tire at the track with the solid roller setup. Now that I have a milder cam (xfi 292) and the car may go to the track once in a blue moon, I'm thinking of changing out the gears to a 4.11. May even sell the 15" Welds and Hoosier QTP's. I have the gears sitting on a shelf with a master rebuild kit. Just haven't decided yet. I'm getting kind of tired of shifting into 5th gear by the time I hit 40mph when putting around town. What to do...

I run a 27" tire with 4:10's & a T56.

Street it is a 4 speed
Hwy 5 speed unless I can maintain a speed of 65 mph or higher I shift into 6th

At 80 MPH in 6th I am just under 2k RPM

there are gear/rpm calculators online you enter tranny type, tire size and rear gears and it shows what RPM at what speed in what gear

IMHO the 4:10 rear gear works great with a 27" tire and T56

I run a 26" MT ET Street tire at the track so the gearing is a little lower (good) in that application

99% of my driving is now street though

I'd gear it for the street especially since you said the car will only see the strip every once in a blue moon. I assume you run/will run either 25.8" or 26" tires on the street? If so, I could see 4.11's being more enjoyable.

Yeah, 275's. It being a 396 with that cam it can cruise at 2000rpm without too much an issue. The SR was much better and could chug right along at 1200 to 1500rpm, but that's neither here nor there.
I've been all over the gear/mph calculators pondering the what if's with the conditions I drive in. All the freeways around these parts are 80mph, but it'd be a rare occasion it'll be on one.

Only have 27's. It's almost equivalent of a 4.11 on a 26" tire at low speeds. Going to put them on this weekend and cruise the streets with the mullet flowing out the window.

Put in the 4.11s, get some street wheels, and enjoy it. Drive the bitch every day if you can.

Having a fun and quick street car again made me miss being able to hop in something that may not be quite as fast...but everything works, it doesn't rattle your kidneys, won't make you go deaf on the highway, and is comfortable and reliable.

Now that the Camaro is basically going to be track duty/putt around car meets ride, and I unfortunately have to sell my badass little Ricer, I see a single turbo 1JZGTE/2JZGTE 4dr like a GS300 in my future. Maybe even an Aristo V300 just to be different. Blasphemy on a big tough LS muscle car forum, I know, but they make killer street cars and have way nicer interiors then our rattle-box 4th Gens...

Both the bike and car are getting miles in this summer. What I meant by 275's is I'm running 275/40/17's on the street right now. I've only ever changed the rear wheels when running at the track. Was wanting to put on the 27x10.5 QTP's and see what it felt like to run them around the street since the ratio would be close to a 4.11 on a 26" tire.
I can relate to wanting to get a better DD and have been looking, but since my current one is paid for and I'm damn near 50 I shouldn't GAF what I drive, right?

Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards. I am going to take it to a track with the way it is now just to see how it does, then later on this summer, will most likely change them out.

4.11 seems like a great choice for how the car is set up now and how you intend to use it.

Of course you already have the gears so go for it, another alternative, although expensive is a gear vendors overdrive, Known of a couple of people that installed one and loved it.

Do they make those for a T56? That is definitely a more expensive route than I want to take.

Second gear is a little too tall for my liking to take off from a stop. If I'm rolling then I do that, but if stopped I usually either short **** into 2nd then 4th, or go from 1st to 3rd to 5th.

Sounds like your ready for the old man mod; automatic transmission FTT (For The Tired)

Seriously though 4.10's still make for close shift intervals such as needing to shift mid corner when hanging a left. Something in the 3.50- 3.70 range(not sure what rear you have) would be more driver friendly but hurt at the track.

Learned how to drive with a '76 Dodge Aspen with 3 on the tree and every car I've owned has been a manual, but yeah my next daily will most likely be an auto.
I put the 27's on and you're right. The difference is not as noticeable as I expected. Plus when doing a rolling stop 2nd gear is almost useless and almost have to shift into 1st. May just keep the current gearing after all.
