Default Looking for lifter recommendations for my 395 build.

Hey guys.

I'm getting ready to start building my 395 and I wanted to see what some of you guys recommend as far as lifters go. I'll detail the build a little to give you an idea of what I might need.

395 CI 4 bolt with billet mains and arp studs
Scat forged crank
Scat forged H beam rods
Mahle -5cc 4032 pistons
LE TFS heads
LE 242/250 hydraulic roller cam
Torqhead 24x swap with LS1 411 pcm
Performabuilt Level 3 trans with Circle D 5c

And pretty much all other bolt-ons or needed parts.

I'm looking at spinning this combo over 7k so I want a good lifter that can withstand some abuse. Should I start thinking about going tie bar or stick with the dogbone setup? I don't mind spending the money to do this right but if I don't need $700 lifters I'm not going to buy them. I just don't want to cheap out and scatter a new motor because I bought junk lifters that blew up and shot metal all over the place.

Thanks guys.

I don't think a bad thing has been said about Crower? Where's power peak going to be?

Why Hydraulic roller over 7k? Solid roller and Jesel shaft mounts would gather up everything the hydraulic setup left on the table IMHO. Even with short travel hydraulic lifter like the Comp 875-16 (max 1/3 turn past zero lash) you're looking at noticeable valve float and power loss above 6600 or so.

Honestly I'm not sure. I will have to ask Lloyd. Which Crowers would you suggest?

Believe me I thought about going solid roller and I might someday but right now I think I'll give the HR a shot...maybe, lol.

Which part # did you have in mind? I have a set of Morel 5315's but I wasn't sure if they will handle that kind of RPM with stability.

That’s the same cam Lloyd specd for me. I’m going 383 and he specd the cam for spinning to pcm 7k limit.. With your 395 it might not even need to spin that high.. I’m guessing 6800 tops..

Just had a full set of Crower lifter rollers delaminate and roast my cam.

I went with the LT1 specific GMPP lifters from Summit this time.

Did you sent the wheels out for material analysis or just assuming? (I bet the cam **** the bed, and took out the lifters)

I run crower link bars in mine on a billet cam, no issues. if you want to push the limits of a controlled 7k HR setup, do not cheap out.

I have no idea. I would seek the best quality offered for a SBC. As Teh ManCrush said, if you're going to spin that high you never want to cheap out on your valvetrain. Also, you will want to be vigilant and check your valvetrain parts often. Especially rollers, trunions and lobes.

Bushed (rather than needle bearing) roller, solid or hydraulic, will remove one more possible trouble source.

Op

since you are getting a LE H/C...ask Lloyd for a recommendation

Maybe you need a bar link vs dog bone type but again discuss with Lloyd

Lloyd, Karl, and my local machinist think it was the other way around. All 16 of the lifters show this defect. Were it just a few, I'd be on your side.

I'm using Comp 875-16 short travel lifters and an AFR hydra rev kit on my new setup.

Thanks for the info guys. I have some options to look into and I definitely agree the valvetrain is not an area to cheap out on.

How do y'all feel about link-bar lifters?

My cam is similar to yours, 237/251 and I went with Johnson Short Travel Axle Oiling Lifters. Expensive but are very good from everything I have heard about them.
