Default Rack and pinion

Hello everyone,

I have an LT1 car with an LT1 umi k member upgrade. I would like to redo my steering from the intermediate steering shaft down. From what I have read, I can install an LS1 rack and pinion(better ride and steering) with a corresponding LS1 intermediate steering shaft, and rack and pinion. I recently went to the junkyard and pulled off an intermediate steering shaft which was from 98+ model year Camaro. The Camaro was a V6 though, but the intermediate steering shaft looks like the LS1 part. I do not know if a V6 steering rack and pinion would work for my LT1 car with K member either. I also don't know what rack and pinion I can get from a Napa or O'Reilly's. There are one to two different part numbered ls1 Camaro rack and pinions sets. One part number seems like an oem, and one says (firm ride). Do all ls1rack and pinions fit lt1 k-members too? This is all very confusing to me. I would really appreciate anyone's help, I still have to get my transmission in, my engine wired, my fuel pump wired, and my brakes done LOL.

Thanks allot!

From what I have found, all 98+ steering racks will fit. However, the v6 cars had slower steering, IIRC. I know for a fact that the intermediate shaft will work, as I sourced mine from a v6.

Seems like the racks may have been different from LT to LS. One thing to check for sure is the ratio. The Z28 ratio should be 2.25 turns lock to lock if I remember right. I bought one from Autozone and they sent me a V6 rack....didn't find out until I had it on the car. Took forever to turn the wheels compared to the Z28 ratio. I had to pull it off and take it back.

Thank you all! I bought this one: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/masterpro-power-steering-4355/suspension---steering-16778/power-steering-16478/rack---pinion-complete-unit-12584/8d7b332a633f/masterpro-power-steering-power-rack-and-pinion-remanufactured/1030160/4507534/2000/chevrolet/camaro?q=Rack+&pos=1.

I set my vehicle to a 1996 Z28 and clicked on the same brand.....the part number below the name is 103-0134 vs 103-0160...so I think they are different. Have a look at this...

Post #6 shows you a good picture of the angle difference between the two...but it appears that you may can use it, if you don't have headers that interfere with it.

I just had the steering rack in my 1997 Formula replaced due to leaks beyond repair. I ended up with that same part number for 103-0134 (for 93-97) which specifies 2 5/16 turns lock-to-lock, same as the 103-0160 for 98+. However, for some reason, feels like I have to steer more to get the same steering angle as before (moving the wheel further left or right).

I no longer have my original steering rack cause they needed it for the core charge refund.

Should I have gone with a different brand or part number? Or do I live with it and eventually get used to it?

Old rack (steer all the way left)

New rack (steer all the way left)
