Default What type of coolant for my 383 lt1 ?

So my 383 lt1 build is getting close to being done and I was wondering what kinda of coolant people use ? I know stock they used Dex or the (orange) coolant. But I was wondering if I can just use the normal green coolant.. I hear dex likes to eat away at head gaskets...? Lmk

If your entire cooling system has been drained completely then you can use the green stuff if you want. I have always used dexcool in all of my fbodies and have never had an issue.

I use Prestone 50/50 and a bottle of Redline.

Dex does not eat away head gaskets. Poor maintenance practices has given dex a terrible name. But, if your system is fresh, and clean you can use whatever you want.

Way back, mine was mean green, and after going through lots of it, I switched to distilled water and water wetter.

Currently back on the mean green kick.

Go green, but only if all coolant passages and hoses have been thoroughly washed to be rid of the orange coolant.

And don't do this if the engine is exposed to below freezing temps for any length of time...

It is amazing how the fallacies of Dex Cool have hung on for the last twenty years.

Either way, I just use the Prestone universal coolant and don't worry about.

Fallacies as far as mixing the two? Or going green. I'd suggest green because it's cheaper to replace than orange.

As far as Dex Cool eating head gaskets, sludging up systems, and kicking puppies.

I do 100% distilled and water wetter in the summer months and 70% distilled 30% dexcool and water wetter in the winter. I do road race often and I live in Texas so I adjust based on temps. It’s part of racing.

50/50 in cold areas is a safe mix for dexcool. Works well...

IIRC, The Dex-Cool issue "sludging up engines" was from the stop leak pellets in cooling systems which reacted to the DexCool

My 96 cam from factory with Dex as it had a 100k mi service life to go along with the OBD2 cars 100k mi major service interval. In less than 2 years my cooling system had brown sludge in it. The dealership, under warranty, flushed the system and put green in. Have been running green for the last 20 years now. YNNV

If the car is never going to see cold weather is it just fine to use distilled and water wetter all the time? Or is there a reason to use coolant?

Coolant also acts as a lubricant for the water pump. I've never used it, but if water wetter has lubricating properties then there should be no issue. Also, ONLY used distilled water.
