Default Distributor gear vs camshaft ? LT1 opti-delete

I have an LT1 from 96 F body in a hot rod I bought about a year ago and it has started to run like crap. I suspect the Opti is going plusI have no love for 20 year old fuel injection so I'm collecting parts for an old school carb conversion, with future upgrade to Fitech FI or something similar.. I bought the GM 24502992 intake manifold, new Edelbrock 1906 carb and Pertronix Ignightor III distributor. I have been reading that the drive gear on the stock LT1 roller camshaft might not be "compatible" with the driven gear on the distributor. Local speed shop advised to run it as-is. Is this a bad idea or should I swap the gear for "melonized" version, or something else, before I put it all together?

Swap to a melonized gear if the distributor doesn't have one already.
