Default 94 cat - gain from removal

Wondering if I should remove the cat on my son's 94 T/A. It has an LT4 Hot Cam, ported heads and Hooker shorty headers. It currently runs 13.4 @ 105 mph. Has anyone seen a gain in power from removing the cat with similar mods? I would think it would be creating some backpressure, especially at the 6,500 rpm shift points.

Eh, hard to say. I did mine 19 years ago when the car was near stock and yes it picked up. Could've just been that the converter itself wasn't very good anymore with 85,000 miles on the car at the time. Will yours gain??? Idk, you can try it but most here Will likely advise you not to. Your biggest gain right now would possibly be a good Torque converter, that's what your going to hear if you want the car to pick up.

Engines are air pumps. If there's a bottleneck, performance will suffer. It will improve, but it will wake up beyond belief if you were to do 1 3/4" long tubes with a 3" off-road y-pipe. Out of curiosity, where are you located?

I'm in Thousand Oaks CA, which is why I don't have long tubes on the car - they won't pass smog on visual inspection. The shorty headers and after-cat cutout are all I can do legally. I'm sure the long tubes would make a big difference. Wish I could use them.

Lots of people used to flange the cat and a straight pipe. Put in the straight pipe in place of the cat when going to the track. Still made a hell of a difference.

Good to know, and that's what I was thinking. I have already flanged the cat to install the headers. I tried to get the same flange from Hooker, but they've discontinued that header kit. Anyone know a source for flanges?
