Default CAN you change the optispark without pulling pulley

So this is the 3rd time in 2 yes that my distributors gone out. I'm going to attempt to change the distributor myself 1 to save money 2 the next time the mf goes out I can just do it myself. so I'm ordering the distributor shaft seal and water pump seal i plan on replacing just smarter that way. but I read on a YouTube comment you don't have to pull the harmonic pulley to change the distributor is this true and any other pointers will help or forum links thank you

The pulley itself must come off but the hub it bolts to can stay on if you clock it just right. I don't recommend it because you can easily mess up alignment of the opti splines/cam dowel.

I've done four swaps now with the hub still installed. It can be a little frustrating because you have to have everything clocked just right for the opti to slide on. When you have it lined up correctly it should slide right in to place flush without using any force. If you have to use force, or it doesn't sink completely flush with the timing cover, then it isn't lined up right.

Thanks!

Chad

OP

the hub can stay but "damper" aka pulley, needs to come off. The cam dowel pin only goes into 1 of the 3 holes on Opti

For the WP drive seal you do need some form of "tool" to install it. Not hard but you do need the tool. Often sold on ebay for $20. Otherwise there is a 99% chance that seal will leak

Once the damper and water pump is removed the Opti R&R is basic.

You can use a sharpie marker cap to slide the seal on the shaft too. Just don’t let the inner seal roll over.
