Oil pump gear drive

I have a 96 camaro 383 lt1. Why when I put the oil pump drive in is there a gap between where the bolt goes threw and the block.? Is the suppost to be a spacer there.?

No. It simply means the teeth are not fully meshed onto the cam gear. Because the gears are curved they won't drop straight in. Rotate the engine by hand and it will fall into place.
